Money Saving Skin Care Tip

Posted on February 06, 2012 by Daniela | 0 comments

A common question we often get asked :

What should I apply my face toner with?

We suggest applying your face toner with cotton rounds instead of cotton balls. Cotton balls are too thick and absorb too much liquid product, wasting the excess product your skin doesn't absorb. To save product use this tip when applying face toner and make-up remover. You'll notice you won't go through as much product.

The Myth of the One-Size-Fits-All Three-Part Skincare ‘System’, Plus When Anti-Aging Products Are Anything But

Posted on January 23, 2012 by Daniela | 0 comments

It’s no secret that we at Belmondo Skincare love using nature’s ingredients in our healthy skin regimen. Teaching our clients, customers, and readers about the benefits of using earth-grown ingredients in their skin care regimen is the heart and soul of what we do.

In Part 5 of this 10-part series on the benefits of natural skincare, we’re busting the myth of the one-size-fits-all, three-part skincare system. We’ll tell you why you may not need to use three products, and tell you how so-called ‘anti-aging’ skincare products may be anything but.

P.S. Look for Belmondo’s Favorite Tips scattered throughout this series. There’s one in each article. We’re giving you the inside scoop on how we enjoy the things of earth, naturally, for beautiful skin and a greener planet – and how you can, too!

You’ve heard it before. We’ve all heard it: we need a three-part skincare system to reveal healthy, gorgeous, balanced skin.

Every major cosmetics company is peddling a ‘system.’ So is every pharmaceutical company with a skincare line. The mystery question I’m left scratching my head over is, why three parts? Why is three the magic number? And how likely is it that any one uniform ‘system’ will improve the skin of any individual who buys into it?

Today we’d like to give a gentle nudge to our readers: don’t believe the hype. Three steps to better skin. Three steps to younger-looking skin. Three steps to 24-hour moisture. They’re myths.

Read on to find out why.

Less is more. Use as many or as few skincare products as you want. Or use no products.

There’s no science to substantiate the claim that using three products in succession in a given order will improve, enhance, or effectively treat skin. In fact, natural skincare wisdom reveals that when it comes to product use, less is often more.

Each of us has a unique skin composition, with varying levels of oiliness, propensity for dryness, and other elemental aspects. Not everyone needs to cleanse, tone, and then apply a serum and/or a face cream every day. For some people, cleansing means applying a steamy warm washcloth to their facial skin in the morning, and then applying a face moisturizer, especially in the Fall and Winter seasons. For others, use of an actual cleansing product might be necessary to remove debris on the skin from night perspiration, or perspiration from workouts, yoga, etc.

The bottom line: know your skin type and lean on your intuition each day within each season when it comes to how, how much, and whether your skin needs to be cleansed, moisturized, and/or toned. Use a product, or two, or three, or none, that makes your skin look and feel healthy, balanced, and clean.

‘Anti-aging’ skincare products? They’re a myth, too.

The bottom line on ‘anti-aging’ skincare products: they don’t work. Before using any product, educate yourself on its ingredients and ask yourself if a chemical or manufactured ingredient is a better alternative than an all-natural ingredient. Unfortunately, one side effect of using products with harsh ‘anti-aging’ ingredients is that they can often cause further damage to skin, exacerbating certain skin conditions, or bringing about skin conditions that weren’t present before the product use. Then we need to use another skincare product to help alleviate the new condition -- and the cycle continues.

Belmondo’s Favorite Tip No. 5: Your skin loves to rest. So give it a break. If you’re using a skincare product and begin to have a reaction to it – redness, peeling, excessive oiliness, blackheads, dryness, rash – the best thing to do is to stop all use of products and just let your skin breathe.

Adopt an all-natural perspective on your health and wellness, including your skincare, and let your skin age gracefully.

While the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries are obsessed with keeping women (and sometimes men) focused on anti-aging remedies, the truth is there is very little science to support the effectiveness of anti-aging products. Instead of playing the odds with your skin and possibly creating unwanted side effects, I encourage you to embrace your natural aging process and your innate beauty.

At the end of the day, there is no hope in a jar.

But there’s plenty of hope in a consistently clean diet and a healthy lifestyle. Together, these approaches work wonders to transform and renew the body and your skin naturally.

The best anti-agers in our book? A big fat smile, a diet of whole foods, moving your body everyday, plenty of sex, lots of water and sleep, and focusing less on aging and more on living with joy, peace, and vitality – because whatever we focus on expands.

So there you have it: two common skincare myths busted. The three-part skincare ‘system’ is not as necessary as we’ve been told, and there is no one-size-fits-all skincare solution. Embrace your skin type and a healthy lifestyle and do what makes you look and feel beautiful – naturally.*

Reasons & Fixes for Winter’s (Oh So Lovely) Dehydrated Skin

Posted on January 17, 2012 by Daniela | 0 comments

It’s no secret that we at Belmondo Skincare love using nature’s ingredients in our healthy skin regimen. Teaching our clients, customers, and readers about the benefits of using earth-grown ingredients in their skin care regimen is the heart and soul of what we do.

In Part 4 of this 10-part series on the benefits of natural skincare, we’re giving you the lowdown on rough, cracking skin – one of the less beloved signs of Winter – and what you can do to replenish moisture and get back to looking and feeling balanced and smooth.

P.S. Look for Belmondo’s Favorite Tips scattered throughout this series. There’s one in each article. We’re giving you the inside scoop on how we enjoy the things of earth, naturally, for beautiful skin and a greener planet – and how you can, too!

Nature Walks. Sparkling snow. Gatherings with family and friends. And dry, rough, cracked skin.

Not exactly your Winter Wish List this year, we’re guessing? We thought not!

Along with the natural beauty of Winter come a few, shall we say, seasonal drawbacks. Wintry elements such as low humidity in the air can easily lead to moisture loss in the skin, which manifests itself as rough, cracked, dry, flaky, or scaly skin. (It sounds lovely, we know. Wink.) Read on to learn more about the conditions leading to skin dehydration and how to prevent and treat it.

What causes skin dehydration? How do I know if my skin is dehydrated?

In short, skin dehydration is caused by moisture loss and the removal of sebum (naturally occurring oils) from the skin. When moisture evaporates and sebum is stripped, the skin becomes dehydrated. What does dehydrated skin look like? Think dry, red, rough, scaly, itchy, lustre-less, and sometimes even cracked. (Ouch!)

What causes the skin to lose moisture? During the Winter in most climates, the atmosphere is the culprit. Osmosis (absorption of water) occurs anytime a climate’s humidity drops to below 80%, which we know is very typical in the Winter.

Low moisture in the air equals low moisture in the skin. Healthy skin usually contains about 20% water content. In cold, dry climates, the skin’s water level can drop to 10%, which is a dehydrated state. This causes a disturbance in the skin’s Ph balance and this affects the flow of fluids and nutrients within the skin’s cell structure. If dehydrated skin is left untreated, these thirsty cells can become permanently damaged, leading to premature aging.

In addition to environmental factors, skin dehydration can be brought on by use of harsh, drying soaps and other stripping, astringent products. At Belmondo, we advocate for the use of moisturizers that contain all-natural ingredients such as olive oil.

How can I avoid skin dehydration in my day-to-day life?

As with anything, it’s easier to prevent dehydration than it is to treat it. We recommend a holistic lifestyle approach that’s easy on the earth and easy on your skin.

Lifestyle tips for keeping your skin well-hydrated and looking and feeling as youthful as possible: get plenty of rest, avoid caffeine and alcohol, and drink lots of water, especially after exercising. Also vital: proper nutrition, meaning a diet filled with organic green vegetables and fruits and other foods with high water content. Healthy fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, organic butter, and wild fish are all welcome components of a skin-friendly diet. We also like supplements containing essential fatty acids (EFAs), which replenish your skin from the inside out and provide additional healthy lubrication to the tissues. And of course, we recommend manual exfoliation of the skin 1-2 times per week with an all-natural exfoliant for optimal cell turnover.

What to avoid: long term exposure to air conditioning or heaters, overexfoliating, and soaps and chemical detergents that contain sodium lauryl sulfates, as all of these are very drying to the skin.

How can I best treat my dehydrated, rough, flaky Winter skin the all-natural way?

To treat dehydrated skin, invest in a good quality, all-natural moisturizer that contains lipids (healthy fats) and other moisturizing elements that are already present in the surface of the skin. (The skin welcomes in what it recognizes to repair and renew itself.) Plant-based oils such as olive oil, shea butter, sweet almond oil, apricot oil, jojoba oil, sesame oil, and safflower oil mimic the skin’s natural lipid content. For a terrific trio of products containing healthy plant-based oils, try The Dew Face Oil, After the Rain Face Toner, and The Cloud Face Cream,

We also are proponents of using skin-friendly butters, such as mango butter, cocoa butter, and shea butter, as well as 100% pure essential carriers oils, such as olive oil, apricot kernel oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, sesame oil, and jojoba oil. All contain lipids that will replenish and revitalize dehydrated skin. The Nectar Hand and Body Butter will get the job done. Avoid oils manufactured with high percentages of synthetic ingredients (read the labels), as they will irritate and dry out the skin.

Belmondo’s Favorite Tip No. 4: Your sweet lips deserve extra special treatment in cold weather. They’re even more prone to dehydration than the rest of your skin due to their special cell structure. Best moisturizers for lips: look for all-natural products with ingredients such as olive oil, beeswax, hemp oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and other rich healthy oils. Around here? We like The Balm.

Special note about dehydration for Retin A users . . .

We commonly see skincare clients who have experienced tremendous dehydration due to use of Retin A, a frequently-prescribed topical solution that claims to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Problematically, the ingredients in Retin A strip the skin so finely that it becomes unable to react normally to environmental effects, thus intensifying dehydration. (No wonder the usual side effects of Retin A are dryness, flakiness, and irritation.)

If you’ve been using a Retin A product, note that it will usually take about a year for your skin’s full health to return after stopping application.

Needless to say, we at Belmondo are not in favor of Retin A and its dramatic drying effects on the skin.

So that’s the scoop on Winter dehydration and how you can both prevent and treat its oh so lovely side effects such as redness, scaliness, and flaking. We advocate a holistic lifestyle approach that promotes cell turnover and replenishing the skin with lipids and other natural elements. We want you and your skin to glow all Winter long!

Nature’s Favorite Skin Cleanser: Apple Cider

Posted on January 16, 2012 by Daniela | 0 comments

It’s no secret that we at Belmondo Skincare love using nature’s ingredients in our healthy skin regimen. Teaching our clients, customers, and readers about the benefits of using earth-grown ingredients in their skin care regimen is the heart and soul of what we do.

In Part 3 of this 10-part series on the benefits of natural skincare, we’re sharing why all-natural apple cider vinegar – yes, the very same kind you use on salads! – is a fabulous choice as a facial cleanser. We think you’ll be surprised and delighted by the skin benefits of this pantry staple.

P.S. Look for Belmondo’s Favorite Tips scattered throughout this series. There’s one in each article. We’re giving you the inside scoop on how we enjoy the things of earth, naturally, for beautiful skin and a greener planet – and how you can, too!

www.belmondo.ca

Foams. Washes. Gels. When it comes to cleansing the skin, which formula is best? Would you be surprised to hear us say, open the pantry and grab the apple cider vinegar?

If so, you’re not alone. The cosmetics industry loves to push chemical-laden skin cleansers, washes, gels, and foams on us, touting that we’ll have the clearest, cleanest, most balanced skin possible from using their products. We’re told to overlook the hard-to-pronounce ingredients on the back of the package whose benefits to us are unclear.

Fact is: scientifically and naturally speaking, the lab-manufactured ingredients in most over the counter skin cleansers – such as chemicals, alcohol, and sodium lauryl sulfate – are detrimental to the long term health of the skin. Cleansing products with all-natural ingredients, such as olive oil and apple cider, serve the skin best and promote overall skin health.

Cleansing is the most important part of your skincare regimen. It’s important to use a cleanser with all-natural ingredients that your earthly body recognizes and responds to positively.

The purpose of a cleanser is to mix with and dissolve excess sebum (naturally occurring oil) on the skin, to refine skin texture, and to provide a balanced condition for moisturizing. Cleansing carries away sweat and debris that have built up on the skin’s surface during the day. A build-up of sweat and debris can lead to skin congestion and acne breakouts.

A cleanser should never ‘strip’ the skin of all natural oils. Harsh, abrasive cleansers, like some marketed by cosmetics companies, do more harm than good to the skin. Too much astringent in a product causes the skin to overproduce oil to compensate, leading to even more acne and blackheads.

How to know if your cleanser is stripping your skin? If your skin feels tight and uncomfortable after cleansing, your product’s ingredients are too harsh and removing the naturally occurring goodness in your skin that make it healthy, supple, and youthful.

Cleansing the skin should restore, protect and strengthen the skin’s structure and leave your skin exquisitely clean. This is easy when using all-natural skincare products.

A great metaphor to keep in mind is the difference in quality between a plump peach and a dried up, shrivelled prune. Natural products leave your skin feeling plump and smooth (like a ripe, healthy peach), not dry and tight (like a prune). Okay, to be fair, we like prunes as food for their health benefits – we just don’t want to look like one!

A bit of science for you: it’s important to protect the skin’s acid mantle. Haven’t heard of an acid mantle? The acid mantle, created with the help of your body’s sweat glands and sebaceous glands, is a thin coating of lipids (oils) and perspiration (water) that lay on the outer layer of the skin. It serves as the body’s protective barrier against disease. Pretty cool, right?

When the delicate balance of acidity and alkalinity – the Ph balance – that makes up the acid mantle is disrupted, the skin is weakened. All natural products with ingredients like apple cider and olive oil allow the skin to maintain its Ph balance, promoting skin renewal day after day.

Let’s talk about the skin benefits of apple cider as a cleanser.

Apple cider contains an all-natural AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that the skin loves. AHAs are a safe way for the skin to receive the benefits of fruit acids without being damaging. Apple cider vinegar is also antibacterial, alkalizing to the Ph, and soothing – three properties your skin loves!

The Rain Face Cleanser contains alpha cider vinegar, is Ph balanced, and is an effective choice for all skin types – from the most delicate to mature skin, to dry and dehydrated skin, to skin with oily imbalances. Unlike a milky or foamy cleanser like the ones many of us are used to buying over the counter, The Rain (as you might expect from the name) is a liquid cleanser.

An alternative to an all-natural liquid cleanser is an oil-based cleanser.

Oil dissolves oil, hence the benefits of using an all-natural oil-based cleanser to remove impurities and naturally occurring oils from the skin’s surface. We suggest The Dew Nourishing Face Oil, which is ideal for every skin type but especially those showing signs of irritation and redness.

Although it may seem counterintuitive to use an oil on already oily skin, natural oils in products like this one carry away debris and sweat and leave your skin looking and feeling clean and balanced, not parched or over-oily.

Belmondo’s Favorite Tip No. 3: After cleansing, you’ll want to use an all-natural toner. Our After the Rain face toner has a secret double purpose. Daniela discovered this almost by accident and is thrilled with her results. Read this blog post and you can start enjoying the benefits, too!

When it comes to cleansing, all-natural ingredients are best. Ditch the harsh astringents and chemically loaded washes and give your skin the relief it craves. Choose products that contain apple cider vinegar when possible. And pay attention to that balanced, smoothed, supple feeling your skin enjoys after cleansing the all-natural way. Your skin and the earth will thank you – naturally!

Exfoliate Your Skin with Olive Oil & Other Natural Ingredients

Posted on January 11, 2012 by Daniela | 0 comments

It’s no secret that we at Belmondo Skincare love using nature’s ingredients in our healthy skin regimen. Teaching our clients, customers, and readers about the benefits of using earth-grown ingredients in their skin care regimen is the heart and soul of what we do.

In Part 2 of this 10-part series on the benefits of natural skincare, we’re giving you the inside scoop on exfoliation, which is the process by which we slough off the layers our skin no longer needs, and reveal the gentle glow we all long for. We bet you’ll enjoy it, too.

P.S. Look for Belmondo’s Favorite Tips scattered throughout this series. There’s one in each article. We’re giving you the inside scoop on how we enjoy the things of earth, naturally, for beautiful skin and a greener planet – and how you can, too!

You’ve probably heard that exfoliating the skin is an important part of a balanced skin care regime.

You’ve heard right. Ex-fo-li-a-tion. Let’s all say it together. It’s good for the skin. And an exfoliant with all-natural ingredients, such as olive oil, almond oil, or apricot oil, is your best option of all.

Skin exfoliation can be accomplished chemically or manually using all-natural ingredients like olive oil and sea salt. Guess which route we at Belmondo Skincare embrace and endorse? You’ve got it: we know that all-natural exfoliants are better for your skin and for the earth. That’s why we use natural oils from the earth as a base for our skincare products, including our Face Scrub and our Clay Mask.

Exfoliation is nature’s way of renewing your beauty.

In fact, everything about exfoliation is a natural process. Your skin naturally exfoliates itself every 30 days as older cells migrate to the surface – making the skin temporarily more acidic – and then are shed, revealing the newer, younger, smoother layer of skin beneath. This natural exfoliation process slows down as we age, so it’s great to help it along by doing it intentionally.

New skin cells are created in the lower layer of the skin, called the dermis. When older skin cells at the skin’s surface aren’t shed rapidly enough due to age or climate, they clog your pores, leading to congestion of the skin and acne breakouts. Shedding old skin cells through a timely and natural process, however, consistently reveals a natural and healthy glow.

Want to hear other benefits to exfoliation? Ladies, removing dead skin cells allows your moisturizer and face oil to penetrate more deeply into the skin, preparing your skin to receive all of your products’ nourishing benefits. Men, exfoliating your face exposes hair follicles, promoting a better shave and fewer ingrown hairs. (So you’ll be more handsome and more comfortable – nice!)

But how often should you exfoliate? And is there such thing as too much exfoliation?

It’s true that over-exfoliating can lead to skin damage. A healthy schedule? Plan to exfoliate every two weeks or so for optimum skin health and cell turnover. In drier climates or in seasons when you’re perspiring more often (such as during the Summer), increase this frequency to once per week.

If you have dry skin, an all-natural exfoliant with an olive oil base replenishes the right type and levels of moisture to the skin as it sloughs away dead cells.

Can’t I just get a chemical peel? Why is manual exfoliation with natural ingredients better for my skin?

Chemical peels and other chemical-based exfoliants, while popular and highly marketed, can be very aggressive to the skin and cause more harm than good. Chemical exfoliants include ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, fruit enzymes, citric acid, or malic acid. They’re usually applied in high concentrations by a medical professional or in lower concentrations in over-the-counter products.

While the thought of putting acid on the delicate skin of your face should be enough to make you cringe, consider that these acids alter the natural, self-renewing state of the skin and become less effective with use over time. So you’re shelling out more money for decreased results.

At Belmondo, we believe that manually exfoliating your skin with gentler, all-natural ingredients, such as olive oil, is just as effective as using chemical versions, better for the earth, and has longer lasting benefits to your skin across time.

Belmondo’s Favorite Tip No. 2: Make a fabulous, all-natural skin exfoliant at home using olive oil and sea salt.

How do I manually exfoliate my skin at home, using all-natural ingredients?

So glad you asked!

To manually exfoliate the skin, scrub the skin gently but firmly in circular motions, using a product such as The Dunes Face Exfoliant or a clay mask. You can use a dry brush or a loofah for the body and be more vigorous.

When manually exfoliating, we recommend you avoid heavily scented and perfumed scrubs, or scrubs with almond or apricot pieces in them, as these can be skin irritants, exacerbating the problems you’re trying to soothe and repair. Note: Naturally-derived almond and apricot oils as ingredients are great for the skin, so keep using those!

How hard or soft should you scrub? There’s a balance. Please be gentle to the delicate, sensitive skin of your face, especially if you have some congestion or acne. You can scrub more firmly on the skin of your body.

We also recommend dry brushing your body skin with a natural bristle brush before getting into the shower. This gets the blood circulating and stimulates the lymphatic system – a pleasant and holistic treat for your skin and your entire body.

What about a clay mask? Do clay masks help to exfoliate the face, too?

Totally! Use a clay mask once a week to exfoliate and absorb dead, dry skin cells. You’ll find your skin looking brighter, clearer, and firmer after each use.

Energetically, clay has cooling and calming properties. Ours and other clay masks work by loosening dirt and impurities from the skin’s surface, purifying and reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, and visibly resolving blemished skin by soothing redness and inflammation.

A bonus: our green clay mask, called The Earth, contains olive oil.

Prior to applying a clay mask, take a few minutes to gently steam the skin over a sink or basin full of hot (not scalding) water. Or apply a very warm (again, not scalding) cloth to your face to moisten the skin and ‘open’ the pores to receive the clay mask’s healing properties.

So there you have it! Not only is exfoliating your skin a wonderful part of a balanced skin care regimen, but manually exfoliating your skin at home using all-natural based products and ingredients is far more beneficial – and less expensive – than chemical exfoliants. We can’t wait for you to experience the benefits of all-natural skin exfoliation.

Want more all-natural skin care tips, plus Belmondo promotions and more? Like us on Facebook. We’ll see you there!

A more in dept look at how to best use Belmondo Products in your daily regime.

The Rain Face Cleanser : Apply with a cotton pad until skin is cleansed. Do not rinse off. Fresh and rousing.

After the Rain Face Toner : Swirl over face and neck with a cotton ball or cotton pad, or gently spray on face and neck and press into skin. Use after cleansing skin, or on its own in the morning, or throughout the day as a refresher. Replenishing and fortifying. This toner is really special. First, it contains no alcohol so it is much less harsh than others. Secondly, it is made by infusing loads of fresh, organic herbs in a combination of witch hazel and distilled water. After the Rain Face Toner is full of nourishing compounds that, in addition to soothing, are beneficial to your skin.

The Dunes Face Exfoliant : Mix a fingerful with a few drops of water in the palm of your hand, then apply to skin of face in circular motions. Ideal for use in shower. Exfoliating, refreshing, and refining. Delightful for all skin types.

The Cloud Face Cream : Massage modest amount into skin of face in the morning and/or evening with light, upward strokes. Lightweight & quick absorbing. Leaves a natural glow and most of our customers tell us they've skipped the make-up.

The Dew Face Oil : Gently massage two drops into skin of face until elixir is absorbed. Use after cleansing and toning. Also use on body. Deeply satisfying for the senses. Can also be used as a cleanser as well. Massage a couple of drops into skin and then remove with a warm wash cloth.

The Earth Clay Mask : Apply weekly all over clean face and let dry {about 15 minutes}. Place warm cloth onto face to gently soften dried mask, then wash off with warm water. Pat face dry. Follow with toner and finish off with face cream or nourishing oil/serum. Reveals clean, gently exfoliated, refreshed skin.

The Balm : Slick lips lavishly. All natural formula keeps lips soft and smooth. A natural treat for your lips.
